Boyaca

Colombia's Boyaca department is located to the north of Bogota. It's about three hours to Tunja, the capital, a city of 180,000. Boyaca is known as the Colombian cradle of liberty. It was here where Simon Bolivar and Francisco Paulaner de Santander routed the Spaniards in the famous Battle of the Boyaca Bridge.

Boyaca offers numerous tourism options. First and foremost is picturesque Villa de Leyva, a small town of 10,000 which comes alive during weekends and holidays with rolos and foreigners alike. Villa de Leyva is just forty-five minutes west of Tunja by bus.

Raquira is another tourist hotspot, famous for its ceramics. Chiquinquira, further west
