Overview: Santa Marta's Hotel Tayromar is an excellent mid-budget option if you're looking for a great, secure location in the heart of the Centro, and just steps from the beach. Hotely Tayromar is a superb base for exploration of the greater Santa Marta area: there's Taganga, a quaint fishing village just five minutes north of the city, la Sierra Nevada, the spectacular mountain range just south of Santa Marta where you'll find Colombia's tallest peak, Pico Colon, la Ciudad Perdida, ancient archeological ruins that require a 5 day hike roundtrip to reach, and Parque Tayrona, the breathtaking ecotourism oasis located just an hour east of Santa Marta.

Neighborhood: Located on Calle 20, on the southern side of Santa Marta's downtown, you're just steps from la Primera, the main thoroughfare that runs along Santa Marta's waterfront. Here you'll find the marina with its beautiful yachts and powerboats, a pleasant beach, and the best dining and nightlife options in the city.

How to Get There: If you're arriving from Santa Marta's Simon Bolivar International Airport it's around a 30 to 40 minute ride, and should cost between $25.000 and $30.000 in a taxi. If you're arriving at Santa Marta's bus terminal, it's just 5 minutes away, and should cost $5.000 or $6.000 in a taxi.

Management/Staff: Colombian owner Marco has turned Hotel Tayromar into one of the best mid-budget spots in Santa Marta.

The staff is always ready to greet you with a smile, and is well-informed about Santa Marta, Taganga, Parque Tayrona, and the attractions in the surrounding areas.

Rooms: The hotel offers 25 clean, comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. All rooms have 75 channels of cable television, free wifi, luxurious mattresses, and AC. All rooms also come equipped with electronic combination safes.

With its great location and reasonable prices, Hotel Tayromar does a brisk business, catering to foreign and Colombian tourists, business travelers, and families. In addition to its standard rooms, there are also rooms with double bunkbeds that are a great option for families or even backpackers looking for a bit more upscale experience.

Amenities: Up on the terrace, you'll find one of the best hotel breakfasts in all of Colombia! Breakfast is served from 7am to 10am daily, and is included in the price. Hotel staff serves up eggs to your liking (huevos al gusto): you have the option of scrambled, fried, over-easy, or cooked with tomato and onion, toast, fruit, coffee, juice, and there is a sandwich bar as well.

Head up to the third floor terrace, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the waterfront. Here you'll find the Moro de Bahia, an island where you'll see a picturesque lighthouse, designed to inform inbound and outbound ships about their location. Look to your right and you'll encounter Santa Marta's port, where large tankers and freighters regularly dock.

And for your convenience there is a quick and affordable hotel laundry service: just drop off your clothing in the morning at the reception, and they will wash, dry, and fold it for you, and have it ready by the afternoon. Laundry service is only $5.000 per kilo, or about $1.25 per pound!

Conclusion: So whether you're a solo tourist, couple, tour group, business traveler looking for proximity to the downtown, backpacker looking for a respite from the typical hostel scene, or even a family looking for a weekend getaway to one of Colombia's most famed tourist destinations, Hotel Tayromar can offer what you're looking for. The staff is attentive and helpful, with some knowledge of English, and safety, security, and guest comfort are an utmost priority. Hotel Tayromar comes highly recommended by Visit Colombia!
