Overview: Renacer Guesthouse is the best spot to stay in Boyaca's tourism mecca: the quaint and picturesque Villa de Leyva. It's a bit far from the centro (about 1.5km north) up a winding dirt road, but owner Oscar Gilede will pay your first taxi. And it is well worth it. Oscar is a wealth of knowledge about Villa de Leyva, Boyaca, and tourism in Colombia in general. He started this hostel over five years ago, and is very enthusiastic about coordinating Colombian trips and adventures.

Neighborhood: Renacer Guesthouse is located at the top of a long hill, about 1.5km northeast of the city. This makes for incredible peace and tranquility, and there is a nature preserve with extensive hiking trails just behind the hostel. There are a couple of corner stores nearby, as well as a military base. At the bottom of the hill, there is one bar/restaurant.

How to Get There: From downtown Villa de Leyva, head north down Carrera 9 or 10, and you will eventually come to Puente la Banadera on your right. Cross the bridge, and then take your next immediate right; you will work your way up a fairly steep road. When you get to the military base on the left side, you're almost there. Look for Calle 21, and turn right, and you'll see a gate at the top of the hill.

Getting to Villa de Leyva, virtually all roads lead through Tunja, the capital of Boyaca. It's just an hour between the two, and buses run daily until 6pm, and cost $8.000.

Management/Staff: Oscar Gilede may be the most knowledgeable hostel host you'll find in Colombia. He has traveled extensively throughout the country, put together a Colombian guidebook, offers extensive tours through the affiliated Colombia Highlands, and is a warm and congenial host.

This hostel is great at quickly orienting you in your new surroundings. They provide a helpful map upon arrival that outlines all local activities, and your various transportation options: (bicycle, horseback, public transportation, or through a specially-guided Colombian Highlands tour). The staff is very friendly and you can tell that they really enjoy providing a specialized experience to each of their guests.

Rooms: The hostal offers luxurious private rooms, as well as dorm accommodations, with space for about sixty guests in total. There is also camping, and ample space for RVs as well.

Shared Rooms: There are three dormitories.

Private Rooms: There are five private rooms.

Amenities: With amenities like a fire pit, beautiful patio, restaurant/bar area, bicycle and horse rentals, and most importantly, a truly impressive array of tours offered throughout related business Colombian Highlands, you will feel right at home.

The hostel is adorned with wonderful maps of Colombia, Boyaca, and Villa de Leyva, as well as posters of the local flora and fauna. Nestled on a hillside, the location offers truly spectacular views of the mountains to the east of the valley. Renacer places a special emphasis on natural beauty and tranquility, and you will greatly enjoyed the elaborately manicured grounds and landscaping.

If you're hungry, make sure to stop by the in-house Pekish restaurant, which offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and such entrees as garlic lamb, falafel, sushi with fresh mountain trout, and nachos with out-of-this-world tortilla chips, made in house. There is also wine for sale, and you can help yourself to cold beer, sodas, and water on the honor system from the fridge in the restaurant area.

Conclusion: With wonderful rooms, beautiful and elaborate grounds, friendly and helpful staff, and a wealth of opportunities to do day trips in the Villa de Leyva area, make this your home away from home in Villa de Leyva. Renacer Guesthouse is sure to be a favorite with backpackers and a more upscale crowd for years to come!
